Dentures are strong, successful appliances that can improve your smile’s appearance and oral health, but there are times when the appliance slip and slide around your mouth, making the denture inconvenient and bothersome. To help you during these times, we are happy to provide the following denture tips:
1. Eat the right foods: When you first start wearing your denture, eating may be a little difficult. To help improve your biting and chewing skills, take small bites and eat soft foods, like eggs, yogurt, ice cream, fish, and cooked veggies. Chew your food slowly and don’t eat anything that’s chewy or sticky, like caramel, taffy, or chewy meats. As you chew, use both sides of your mouth at the same time. When time passes and you become more familiar with the denture, you can gradually add harder and more solid foods to your diet.
2. Use denture adhesives: If you want to keep your denture from slipping and sliding around in your mouth, denture adhesives are great products for you! Adhesives keep your appliance secure and stable. When using the product, don’t use a large amount and make sure you follow the instructions carefully. Also, do not use the adhesive to fix poorly fitted or old dentures.
3. Speak or read out loud: Speaking out loud and slowly will help your tongue become more familiar with the appliance. You can speak out loud in front of a mirror or you can read a book out loud to do the trick.
4. Bite down and swallow before speaking: If you notice your denture slipping or sliding, it is best to gently bite down and swallow. Doing so will put the denture back in place.
